Chapter one
June 22nd 1999
Casie was running through the woods trying not to look back; trying to keep her bare feet off of the pine needles and broken twigs. Her heart beat was throbbing against her thorax, her breathing was more like panting for fresh air, and her hair was matted with sweat at the back of her neck. Still she focused on running and tried to forget what she was running from. She stopped briefly when she arrived at a fence. She had a burst of overpowering fear and then changed her direction from north to west and followed the edge of the fence. Above the fence she saw a road with, unfortunately, no transport what so ever. Casie tried to think of the film she had watched with her boyfriend last month. She guessed that it was a month ago, but she could not be too sure. Nobody is certain about much if they have been locked away from society for a long period of time. Casie started to panic again when she came to another dead-end. The urge to look over her shoulder became too much and so she glanced as fast as she could, and was surprised to find nothing there. Nothing there but the darkness of the woods that she had been sprinting through. Casie decided to climb the fence so that she could walk along the side of the road. She knew that she would be embarrassed about what she was wearing but decided to grin and bear it, she desperately did not want to go back to that beast. Her mind started to flash back to what she had gone through for the past month. An ice cold sheet fell across her as she remembered everything. Remembered the pain and icy cold hands she had felt. But most of all she felt the numbness of not being able to do anything; of trying to get out. Her trance was broken by the sound of a van. She quickly pushed her self up on top of the wooden fence with her bruised and bloody hands and sat in view for the vehicle that was quickly approaching. She sat in silence as she saw headlights come into view, and waited. When the van was approximately 30 seconds away from seeing Casie she had a hot wave of concern flow through her. Her mind raced through all of the possibilities of what could and could not happen, what she was doing and whether it was a good idea. Just before the van’s headlights reached her body she knew that she was doing the right thing, she didn’t know how she had came to that conclusion but all she knew is that she didn’t want to end up in the hands of the evil one.
That’s what Casie called it. The evil one. She had thought it was a great name, due to the fact that she didn’t know if it was a male or female, fat or thin, old or young, in fact she didn’t know anything about this thing because the place where she stayed was pitch black and it never talked. Just did stuff, evil stuff, and came back to her when ever it pleased. Sometimes she would be alone in the dark for days. She cherished those days. In her eyes those were her only days of freedom.
The vans headlights glowed Casie’s battered body. The hot flow of concern had vanished when the front of the van had come into view and Casie saw that it was a women in her late fifties driving alone. The back of the van could not be seen because of a wall of tinted glass was there, but she knew that she must be alone otherwise why would they be in the back with no seats. She knew that it would not have seats because this van was like the vans builders have for transporting all of their equipment around.
The van pulled over beside Casie. The women’s face was shocked with a hint of sadness in her eyes. She wound her window down and said with a tightness in her throat,
“ Are you alright love? Do you need a ride to a hospital?”
She had a croaky voice that seemed painful for her to used. Casie replied trying to sound calm:
“ Yes please, could you take me to the nearest hospital?”
Casie’s throat hurt from the deeds she had had to do that same day, and from all the screaming that she had done lately. She knew that the hospital would be the safest place for Casie right now, in fact it was her only option, she had no family left and her boyfriend was properly still away on the trip her took before Casie had disappeared; unless Casie’s disappearance had been reported onto the news, but she highly doubted that. The evil one was sneaky and even she knew that from her talking to others that had been captured with her. But they all vanished within a week, she never saw them again. Also they didn’t know what sex the evil one was, which Casie had always found strange, it just always seemed to wear a mask.
“rightee ho hop into the back and I’ll take you to the local hospital.”
“ thank you, but could I not stay in the front with you?
“ not on your nelly love, I don’t want people thinking that I have done that stuff to you, I could get done for that. Don’t worry I’ll let you know when where there.”
“ Okay, thank you.”
The women hopped out of her side of the van and travelled to the back doors of the van, Casie followed her to the back and watched the women as she put her key into the door lock. She turned the key and gave her a quick grin from one corner of her dry mouth.
The women gave the key a quick turn in the lock and opened one of the doors.
“ Alrightee then get yourself in and were all set.”
“ thanks again, I don’t know how I would of got to the hospital if you hadn’t of been here.”
“ awww shucks, thanks kid. Well the quicker you get yourself in, the faster you will get into the hospital.”
Casie hated being called a kid, she had had to live with that until her big brother had moved out of the family home. Casie was 17 years old and he had never let her forget that she was the youngest. It was always,
“ hey kid” and “ what ya up to kid”, he practically had used kid at the end of every sentence that he would use that was aimed toward her. She knew that that would be one thing that she would truly miss. Her boyfriend called her Casie but her parents use to call her Cassandra. Her boyfriend was 21, and her parents never agreed with the age cap, Casie could hear herself telling her parents just a month ago,
“ I’ll be 18 in just 2 months and then you won’t be able to tell me who I can and can’t date because I will be an adult.”
Casie’s throat tightened.
“ ya goina get in love? Or have you chicken’d out?”
“ No, no, sorry just daydreaming.”
With that Casie knew she should stop thinking, and headed towards the darkness of the back of the van. She push her head through the thick black of the boot, eyes squinting trying to catch a glimpse of light when suddenly a blast of pain jolted through the back of her neck. The pain was that bad that she blacked out. When she awoke darkness was the only thing she saw, and heard only the sounds of foot steps gaining closer and closer with each breath.
