okay with reading stephine meyers post about midnight sun, it got me wondering. are we as a scan group doing a bad thing? i mean we do not own the copyrights on these, and yet we are posting these on the internet. what are your views? do you think this is okay and we should continue? just to let you know, there is a fine pentality for breaking copyright...its something like £60,000 and a gaol sentence for 5 or 6 years... should i carry on scanning wild ones because mangatraders excepts it??? i know that mangatraders moderates the manga and gets rid of them if they break copyrights or something, so i honestly don't know...oh and no worries i will still be scaning wild ones, i just want some one to help clear my head lol!

*sigh* Hime-sama, if we all followed the rules, we would all be govenment mongrals. Midnight Sun was ILLIGALLY released. Which means it was release without being published first. And besides, we have our DISCLAIMER!!!!

no its just my dad found out about this site, and now he's interested * i know i was shocked too* and he wants to be apart of it, and wants to see EVERYTHING i am doing on it, so i kind of got panicked.....but i guess your all right so i'll shut up now lol

well... you lured me in with arakure so i really can't say anything. i'm a huge fan and would never have even known about the series if it wasn't for scanlators. i still buy the book version when they go on sale even if i have the electronic version so i don't feel so bad for taking licensed materials. either way, the publishers are still taking my money. oh well....

Well, most scanlation groups dropped their project once it's licensed in the US. But each group can have their own policy.
For example, we scanlate manga A, but a few months before we could finish it, that manga is already licensed in the US. Thus, we have the choice to drop the manga (to support the mangaka, since the official English version is available) or we can continue scanlating it, until we finished the whole series.

But, most scanlation groups ignore that and race with the licensed version. So, they try to work as best as they could before the actual licensed version is available.

Again, it's back to the group's policy. Whether they want to continue doing it or drop it and look for another series. One thing for sure, I hope we don't have to fight over a title with another group since there are zillions of other unlicensed series that haven't been scanlated.

I'm new here but my feeling is this: licensed manga are not always actually available for purchase. Just ask anyone who is still waiting for Haou Airen or Masca (stalled at volume 2). Publishers pick them up and then change their minds and just sit on the license barring anyone from actually reading them. I ALWAYS read scans before I buy anyway. If I like it enough I WILL buy it. I have done this several times but how will I even know which series I like without scans to check them out. Browsing at the manga store is a waste of time since most series I like are rarely stocked. (I always have to special order them or buy them online)
Without the world of scanlation, the world of manga sales in North America would be far less than it is now.
So you are a doing a public service!
If you are concerned about the licensed ones, make it a little harder to get those (like have to request a password or something). I know I will be struck down by people who don't like this (I don't either) but if it covers your butts a bit more I don't mind jumping through extra hoops. You're the ones taking the risk after all.

It's really a personal preference. It beats looking all over the place for it. As far as mangas goes, I buy and I read online. Driving all over town looking for that one title is a hassle, not to mention a waste of gas. No point in calling since the employees are half-a$s and don't know what you're talking about. And I have drove all over countless times just trying to find that one book.

Yes, everyone knows it's wrong, but that still doesn't stop us. Everyone also have their own policy and I admit that even if it's not scanlated, I don't think I would have known about xx series. I'm on that if I like a series, I buy it, even if I already read it. Most of the time reading online is just more convenient since some English publishers are known to mysteriously drop titles because of low sales and scanlators tend to not pick it up due to the fact that "it is licensed."

Everything have to belong to someone. I'm not justifying anything, it's just that don't get caught doing it. At least do it discreetly or don't make it well known. Underground is the best way to go. Mangatraders do check their files and host it, but if the publisher doesn't contact them about it, then it won't be removed. Just advised users/members to try and not redistribute it--even though this is unlikely.

For me, I do some license scanning too, but as long as I'm not making a profit off of it, then I'm okay with it. I try to be discreet about it, but they're usually floating in my face.

I wouldn't worry if I were you Hime. You are not charging for scanlations and the government or more precise the officials only go after those who sell licensed manga or books or anything else...

Well, I'm not so sure if it's ok that way or not. I put myself in a Mangaka's shoes and I'll immediately say no, because, you're stealing my viewers...? But what about ppl who just can't have your work to read.... let alone appreciate it....or even know you at all, because they can't? while I'm in my position, in a country where Manga doesn't exist. Where I can't buy it online since it's too expensive for me. (empty pocket) and I am a Manga freak.... I'll ask that Mangaka's mercy because, due to you scanlators, I have this tremendous thing in my life to enjoy, relief my sorrows with, have laugh out loud moments and learn a great deal about life.... It's not as cheesy as it's sounds because it is real. Just for this reason I support scanlations through n through.

We do what we have to do. If the time comes when 'big-brother' comes to wave a finger at us, that's that. But until then we can keep going; we're following the rules, so they can't do anything...yet.
